Achieving Physical and Emotional Relief through Sound Healing
 Picture
Sound healing is an age-old tradition that has paralleled human evolution for almost two hundred thousand years, yet it is just now beginning to gain recognition in the world of neuroscience as a studied form of therapy.  Although sound and vibration as a focused instrument in the altering of consciousness has been used in various forms in cultures all over the world for thousands of years it has only been in the last thirty to forty years that sound therapy has developed in the western world as a relief agent for depression, anxiety, and trauma.

I have experienced group sound baths before, which is essentially where a group of people are exposed to a multitude of vibrations from instruments such as gongs, Tibetan singing bowls, flutes, harps and the voice, but when I was given the wonderful opportunity to book a private session with certified sound healer, Billie Woods, in Austin, I was excited to examine the effects of this mode of therapy in a more individualized setting.

Billie is a musician as well as a holistic practitioner she sings, and plays both the harp and the piano professionally.  She says the purpose of sound healing is "three-fold: to align body and mind with the universe, to attune organs and bodily systems with each other, and to create a state of bliss that can be recalled at will."

When I began to look for a technical explanation for why sound healing works on such profound levels, I found there are many approaches in analyzing this science.  It seems Cymatics is about as technical as it gets in the study of the influence of intentional sound waves on physical matter, and there is a world of study existing on the relation between sound and our universe.  I highly recommend checking out some of these websites if you are interested in this cosmic phenomenon:

Regarding sound as healing for the body, mind and spirit, Billie explained how in her sessions, she strikes ancient instruments such as Tibetan singing bowls, tingshas, gantas and dorjes, in specific rhythmic patterns to create vibrational sound harmonics.  These harmonics resonate at the frequency of "OM" or "AUM", a sacred Sanskrit mantra used in various spiritualities meaning "the imperishable word, the universe".  Eventually entrainment occurs in your brain waves, syncing their waves to the vibrations of the bowls.  This slows down the brain waves, as well as respiration and heart rate, as the harmonic vibrations disrupt deeply entrenched patterns of pain impulses to dispel chaotic energy in the mind and body.  The effect of this practice is to impart a sense of peace and clarity and wellbeing in the receiver.  Billie's sessions are unique because she incorporates those specific rhythms to attune to specific issues or areas of the body.  For instance she says, "If I am playing the bowls on and around the body for grounding purposes, I will use a basic primal 4 beat rhythm."  Additionally, she gives you a wonderful tissue doused with a specific essential oil (mine was cedarwood) to smell in order to prolong the calming effects of the session as long as possible.

I would say my experience in my individual session left me with exactly that feeling: tranquility.  It felt amazing to have the singing bowls placed directly on my palms and down the center of my body as Billie played them.  Afterwards, I felt calm and centered but also very awake and alert.  I do think the next day felt difficult.  I felt bits of sadness arising for no apparent reason, and mild anxiety as if my being recognized a shift occurring.  On the third day, I felt a sense of ease and lightness, which lasted throughout the day.  Interestingly, I notice that I have come into contact with minor personal stressors and negative thought habits throughout my days, but they definitely have not elicited the normal stress response that I am used to.  I find myself engaging with them as they come up, but as they arise it is as if I were being shown an alternative perspective to these patterns.  If this sounds abstract, it's because it is.  I make no scientific claims on this experience, but I am curious to see what subsequent sessions will yield.  Billie did mention it usually takes three to four sessions to see long-term results.
