DIY Extraction Methods for Medicinal Mushrooms
Reishi Mushroom

Recently I found myself perusing the tincture section of the Herb Bar in Austin, Texas.  I am a huge fan of the distinct benefits of mushroom teas, powders, tonics and tinctures made from healing mushrooms such as Reishi, Cordyceps, Chaga, Turkeytail, Shitake, Lion's Mane, Agarikon, and Agaricus blazei, and I am always looking to incorporate more of their magic into my daily life.  After looking over the beautiful products in this little shop for a while though, a thought occurred to me: I could make my own mushroom tincture!  I thought back to when I rented a room from a Brooklyn-ite in January who had large pots of mushrooms soaking all around his kitchen.  He had been making his own tinctures out of them for years, and while his process looked advanced, I am aware the actual tincture-making process can be made quite simple.  So today I am going to go through two processes that will help you extract all the special qualities from any dried medicinal mushrooms you may have.  If these are not easily sourced in your area, we offer top grade capsules on goodbod.com, and the links will be offered at the bottom of the blog.  Additionally, it is important to realize that in order to gain the health benefits of medicinal mushrooms, they need to be heated to a temperature that will break the cellulose-like walls of their cells holding all the polysaccharides.  The most common ways to do this are as a tea decoction, a hot water extraction, or a hot ethanol extraction.
1)
Double Extract Process
 (Big thanks to the
Mountain Rose Blog
 for this recipe!)
Double extractions are great because mushrooms hold some components that are water-soluble and others that are only alcohol-soluble (triterpenes).  This double process gets you the best of both worlds!
Ingredients
80 proof or higher alcohol
organic dried mushrooms
spring water
Equipment
mason jars
stock pot
straining cloth
First make an alcohol extract by filling mason jars halfway with mushrooms.  Cover them completely with alcohol, leaving about an inch of space from the top of the mason jar.  Let sit for a month, shaking daily.  When ready, strain into a jar and set aside.
For the second component, the water extract, bring half a gallon of water to simmer in the pot.  Add mushrooms from the alcohol extract into the water and let simmer about 2 hours, or until the water has reduced about 8-16 ounces.  Keep an eye on water level, as you don't want it to evaporate completely.  You may need to add water during the process.
Let it cool.  Strain and compost the mushrooms, reserving the mushroom-infused water to combine with the alcohol extract.

Voila!  Your double-extract mushroom tincture is ready.

     2)
Honey Extraction Process
This process is by far my favorite, as it combines two things
I love most.  Mushrooms and honey!  I am
currently experimenting with a Chaga and Cordyceps
blend in local, organic, unprocessed honey.
This method is very simple as well.
Take a mason jar and fill it
a third of the way with dried, organic mushrooms.  Fill it the rest of the way with honey.  The honey
will reduce in volume as it is absorbed into
the mushrooms, so you may need to add a bit
more the next day.  Label the jar and let sit
for at least two weeks, shaking the jar daily.

Now you have delicious, magical Mushroom Honey!

All of the mushrooms I listed have been used for centuries in folk medicines, and offer an astoundingly broad range of benefits, growing as gracious offerings of superfood for the immune system.  I personally notice a great boost in energy and a clearer mind when I imbibe Cordyceps or Reishi blends daily for several months.

Reishi has maintained an incredible reputation in countries such as China, Japan, and Korea for being "an herb of immortality".  Through prolonged consumption it will help with chronic allergies, repair lung and liver damage from pharmaceuticals, and promote radiant health and long life through its normalizing action, all while causing no side effects.  Reishi is most known as an immune boosting tonic and an aid in lowering cholesterol, but it also builds energy, and in Chinese medicine is considered a vital way to recover energy spent in stressful situations.  Reishi is believed by the Chinese to protect the Spirit and, according to various sources, encourages wisdom and insight.
Other mushrooms, such as Chaga, Maitake, and Turkey Tail have gained a great
