What Autoimmune Diseases Can Teach You About Your Relationship with Your Immune System

Are you currently dealing with an autoimmune disease?  According to the website aarda.org, the National Institute of Health estimates up to 23.5 million Americans suffer from some sort of autoimmune disease, while other websites claim this amount to be closer to fifty million.  Such statistics appear to be staggering, but it should be noted there are over eighty different types of autoimmune diseases currently being dealt with by our culture.  The most common of these are Graves' disease, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, Type 1 diabetes, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease, systemic lupus erythematosus, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

The most important thing we can learn about autoimmune diseases is that they are raising major red flags around our relationships with our immune systems.  The mind and body are our most precious assets in this life, and if you are addicted to stress, processed fuel, and lifestyle choices depleting you of core soul sustenance, it is natural your body will give you a reason to step back and reassess your daily routine.  This can be a positive opportunity to retune to more sustainable modes of relaxation, such as yoga, spending time outdoors, and meditation.  Additionally it may be time to target improving your daily meals with organic produce and living foods.  Physical symptoms are simply our body talking to us to inform us of what is going on inside.  If you can remain sensitive enough to perceive when your body feels out of balance, you will be that much ahead of the game in maintaining your wellbeing.

Any autoimmune disease is characterized by when the body's immune system deciding its own healthy cells are foreign, and that they need to be attacked. These diseases affect different body parts, triggering a variety of symptoms.  It is possible to suffer from more than one of these diseases at a time, and it is interesting to note these diseases are often genetically predisposed to occur.  Seventy-five percent of those suffering from these diseases are women, African Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans.  There is no curative therapy the diseases usually fluctuate through periods of remission therefore actions lies primarily in relieving symptoms after diagnosis.  An additional major autoimmune issue being encountered right now by large numbers of the population is celiac sprue disease, which is a reaction to gluten (found in wheat, rye, and barley) that causes damage to the lining of the small intestine.

The main factors contributing to autoimmune diseases are bacteria, viruses, drugs, chemical irritants, and environmental irritants, as well as genetics.  Unfortunately, these factors prove to be incredibly vague hazards to avoid.  The initial symptoms can be just as ambiguous, presenting themselves as general malaise, fatigue and fever.  If you believe you may be experiencing serious symptoms, you can be tested for inflammation, red and white blood cell counts, and antibodies your system is producing which will indicate what exactly your body is trying to fight off.  According to healthline.com, it is indicated a lifestyle embracing a balanced and healthy diet, regular exercise, plenty of rest, vitamin supplements, decreased stress, and limited sun exposure will provide preventative measures to help avoid dealing with these chronic conditions in the first place.

Shifting our mindset about treating autoimmune diseases may be reliant on our ability to improve how we communicate with ourselvessensing body temperature, fatigue, stress levels etc.  Combining the aforementioned approaches with this refined mindfulness of the way our body feels in any given moment may just give those struggling with autoimmune diseases an upperhand in their prevention and soothing of symptoms.
