20 Tips for Self-Improvement
20 Tips for Self-Improvement

 by Margot Weidemann

 Improvement is a subjective idea
.  When people think of the term self-improvement, what usually first comes to mind is the positive development of generally accepted, fundamental priorities of human life.  These priorities can be summed up as an essential formula for living the "good life", a philosophical idea originally associated with Aristotle and Plato.  Modern terminology has further defined such priorities as synonymous with these specific factors: health, wealth, love, ethics, purpose, balance, relationships, community, home, career, creativity, etc.  Therefore, in order to achieve astounding levels of happiness unique to your personal experience, it appears pragmatic to focus on methods of self-improvement in relation to the various fundamental factors affecting your physical, spiritual, emotional, and mental wellbeing.

In this week's blog, I am going to present twenty brief exercises that will correspond to all key factors relevant to sustaining such a positive personal environment, internally and externally.  Robert Lanza, an American doctor of medicine and pioneering scientist in the fields of regenerative medicine and biology, proposes in his theory of Biocentricism, "our consciousness creates the universe rather than the other way around".  In conjunction with this theory, I propose that committing to positive daily actions and conscious thought processes in alignment with general goal setting may produce extremely beneficial and noticeable effects on your immediate external environment.  How you choose to define your progress and improvement will be on your own terms, but here is a quick list designed to help you on your path to creating the "good life".
1.)
 Wake up early
(Between 6-7 in the morning).  Many geniuses throughout history, such as Mozart, Georgia O' Keefe, Steve Jobs and Frank Lloyd Wright, have sworn by waking even as early as 4:30 AM in order to work most effectively.
2.)
Set goals with deadlines
.  Review this list daily, taking note as to what action needs to be taken to achieve each item on the list.
3.)
 Visualize success
in all aspects of your life.  Really dig in with your imagination, incorporating taste, touch, smell, sound and vision.
4. )
Ask for luck, energy and support
in any way you know how.  You never know who may be listening or available to help.
5.)
Think positively!
Start first thing when waking.  If it helps, print out lists of positive affirmations and place them around your home and office, and even in your car.  Multiple studies prove thoughts strongly affect expectations, awareness, and physical and mental abilities, which ultimately affects our externalized environment.
6.)
Listen to inspiring music
.  Classical music and cinematic soundtracks are often helpful for finishing tasks, calming the mind, and motivation.
7.)
Address your emotional intelligence
.  This is the system in our bodies that lets us know when we are on the right or wrong track.  Charles Darwin believed this to be a massive factor in our evolutionary potential.  For example, we feel badly when we are physically hurt, and we feel positive emotion from physical acts of pleasure such as recreation and sex.  These symptoms are directly related to survival instincts, telling us whether we are on a path of self-preservation or destruction.  Humans have evolved enough spiritually for our actions to not be based solely on survival, but this is the clearest way of understanding the importance of cultivating this awareness.
8.)
Develop self-efficacy
.  This is the belief that one can perform a novel or difficult task, or cope with adversity in various domains of human functioning.  Self-efficacy differs from self-esteem in that it correlates directly to actual ability rather than perceived self worth or value.  How do you develop yours?  Try something new!
9.)
Read

an hour of fiction a day
.
10.)
Watch at least one inspiring video or speaker a day.
11.)
Play!
Whether it is outside or indoors, on your own or with a friend, just get silly.  Don't be afraid to let loose.
12.)
 Reach out to your community.
This is another way of developing self-efficacy, as it can teach you strengths you never knew you had.
13.)
 Collage.
Cut out inspirational quotes, images, colors, and paste them onto a board that you will see daily.  You will be surprised as to the motivational effect it will have on you.
14.)
 Eat healthy.
Choose organic fruits, vegetables, and grains when possible.  The fuel
