LIVER DETOXIFICATION 101
How do you know you need to detox your liver?

Several symptoms suggest the liver organ may be having a hard time.  According to nourishholisticnutrition.com, these include:

            -fatigue
            -trouble digesting fatty foods
-pain or discomfort over the liver
            -excessive abdominal fat
            -acid reflux/heartburn
-overheating of the body and excessive perspiration
-acne, rosacea, or itchy and blotchy skin

Extreme symptoms are high blood pressure, long-term fatigue, high cholesterol and triglycerides, sleep apnea, and even fatty, yellowish lumps around the eyes.

Your body is a reflection of your regular eating habits and the toxins you may or may not be consuming.  If you are showing symptoms that you need to detox your liver, it is wise to try a detox program of 16-21 days.  That way, in addition to giving your liver the rejuvenation it is craving, you are introducing new, healthy habits you can hopefully adopt as a permanent and sustainable way of eating.

The liver becomes clogged for various reasons, but often a diet high in simple carbohydrates and processed foods combined with environmental toxins such as chemicals, pesticides, food preservatives, heavy metals, and water contaminants creates a difficult world for your liver to thrive in.  As it becomes less able to do its two jobs the natural detoxification of the body as well as digestion it creates a septic, depressed state, thus limiting your body's utilization of vital nutrients.

So how do you detox?

First of all everyone is different.  It is important to listen to your body's needs when it comes to what is working and what isn't.  Often some discomfort will occur during a cleansing, but it should only be obviously related to the toxins being flushed from your system.  It is great if you are able to take some downtime during your cleanse to realign with goals and intentions and possibly take inventory of why your body is calling for this detox in the first place.  This can be a wonderful way to embrace any initial effects of toxins being flushed out (i.e. headaches, light nausea, sleepiness).

That being said, as a general rule you might first take stock of your environment.  Check out whether there is any smoke, gasoline, paint, glue, cleaners, nail polish and perfumes present asking to be removed.  Also you can ditch the toxins infecting your food and drink including:

-alcohol, preservatives, dyes, pesticides, fertilizers, chlorinated and brominated products

Additionally, watch out for skin products.  The skin is the largest organ in your body, and what you put on your skin is directly absorbed into the body, so keep it clean!  That means no chemical preservatives whatsoever.

Now it's time to focus on what you are actually putting in your mouth.

Pure Pharma suggests starting each day with a cup of warm water and 1/2 a lemon or 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar.  The Vitamin C in the lemon helps to kick-start your digestion and alkalize the body.

Also, drink tons of water and herbal teas like dandelion root, lemon, ginger, green tea, licorice, lemongrass and rosehip.  This flushes your system throughout the day.

Eat green leafy vegetables (kale, spinach, beet greens, watercress).  The high amounts of chlorophyll they carry actually absorb environmental toxins from your blood.  Amazing right?

Spices like turmeric, cayenne, cinnamon, and nutmeg are all potent liver cleansers.

Incorporating high amounts of fiber-rich foods (apples, pears, nuts, seeds, and brown rice) binds toxins, getting rid of them quickly and efficiently.

Get hot and sweaty!  Any kind of exercise or sitting in a sauna is helpful to sweat the bad stuff out.

Last but not least: get a lot of sleep!  Your body is most capable of healing itself when it is refreshed and energized by a full night's sleep.

Some people enjoy juice cleanses as well, and this can be beneficial in the first couple of days of your cleanse.  One juice recipe that is wonderful for restoring the liver is this special guy, found on the website for the Global Healing Center:

·       3 Organic Carrots (peeled and washed)
·       1 Organic Beet (peeled and washed)
·       2 Organic Red Apples (washed and cut)
·       6 Organic Kale Leaves
·       ½ inch of ginger root
·       ½ organic lemon, peeled

Juice these ingredients together and enjoy!
It also helps to boost any cleanse with vitamin supplements.  Try our Herbal Cleanse FIRST product for a 24 hour internal cleanse.
