Cat's Claw: The Wonderful Herb of Peru

Picture
Cat's Claw is a vine found in Peru.  It is considered sacred, a "treasure beyond measure", earning its name through its appearance: it grows curved, hooked thorns on the vine that look like the claws of a cat.  The vine can also be found under the names uncaria tomentosa, una de gato, the life-giving vine of Peru, and samento.

Cat's Claw has been used for centuries by Peruvians to treat a wide variety of digestive and degenerative illnesses, and at this point has been compared by Americans and Europeans to other phenomenal herbs such as echinacea and golden seal due to its abilities to heal.  It is considered to be a powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant agent, known for aiding in DNA repair, joint health, immune function, and normal cell division.  Additionally, it may be beneficial for people dealing with diabetes, lupus, organic depression, menstrual irregularities, chronic fatigue syndrome and cancer.  Studies suggest it may halt the spread of cancer cells, and according to altmedicine.com, a few animal studies suggest it may help with cell damage caused by chemotherapy or radiation treatment.

The root bark is the most potent part of the plant.  There are two types of this herb sold on the commercial market: Uncaria tomentosa, most commonly found in supplements for a variety of medicinal uses, and Uncaria guianensis, used traditionally for wound healing.  U. tomentosa has been the type finding the most popularity and success in Western markets.  Interestingly, there has been recent questioning of one alkaloid cancelling the immunostimulating effects of the other alkaloids in U. tomentosa.  Alkaloids are a therapeutic value found in most plants, producing a wide variety of effects, such as stimulating immunity, and are highly prized in herbs such as cat's claw.  Therefore, researchers are continuing to seek the most optimal consumption of this plant.  Also it may be noted that any form of the herb bought from a Western market resource may be substantially less potent than a tonic produced in Peru.

You can find Cat's Claw in tablet, capsule, tea, dried herb, or tincture form.  It is easy to make your own tincture if you have the dried herb handy.  Simply take a dark brown glass container, fill it with the herb, and then fill the container with alcohol until the contents are completely covered.  Seal the container, label it with the herb and date, and store in a dry, shady area for at least two weeks, shaking occasionally.

Cat's Claw is generally safe with low risk of side effects, but according to lifeextension.com, it should not be used by pregnant women or children.  This may be due to the fact that cat's claw has been known to be used as a mild contraceptive, although this statement lacks scientific evidence.
