The Transformative Nature of Essential Oil Baths

In the past week's blog, Turn on the Love, I discussed treating yourself to a healing oil bath.  Aromatherapy, the use of aromatic plant extracts and essential oils in massage or baths for therapeutic benefit, has been practiced for centuries, but surprisingly few people are familiar with the dramatic healing effects of an essential oil bath.  My mother, Marianne Weidemann, is an experienced practitioner of oil baths, and I have received numerous baths from her since I was very young.  She says she loves working with this form of healing because, "the needed changes happen so fast and they are so profound."

I definitely agree with her sentiments.  Marianne uses a pendulum to read for the oils her clients are calling for, how much oil to use in the bath, as well as if the bath will require a specific amount of apple cider vinegar as well.  Apple cider vinegar is beneficial in the bath due to its ant-inflammatory and detoxifying properties.
In this blog I would like to share my personal experience with essential oil baths, why I think they are so effective, and a list of resources for you to use to learn more about aromatherapy.

The first oil bath I can remember experiencing was very intense and dreamlike.  I was submerged in the bathtub with a snorkel, due to the fact that oil baths are most effective when your head is covered by the bath in addition to the rest of the body, and I recall seeing a variety of colors and lights behind closed eyes.  I felt emotions pulsing through me, and suddenly a rush of heat overtook my skin.  I ended up having what is actually a common reaction to one of the oils in the bath: my skin responded to the heat of the oil by becoming inflamed.  Certain oils are more "fiery" than others, such as ginger and cinnamon, and will draw intense emotions such as anger and rage from the emotional body.  They can produce symptoms ranging from a sort of tingling sensation to the burning experience I felt if not handled properly.  It is nothing to be afraid of, they simply require more respect and preparation in baths.

This preparation can be done through covering yourself in olive oil to protect your skin, as well as mixing olive oil into the bath.  I feel like I experienced a mystical lesson through my first experience with oil baths, and although it involved an intense physical reaction, I see it as evidence of the strength behind this healing.  When approaching essential oils it is important to see them as carriers of physical, spiritual, and emotional healing properties.  They are gifts from our Earth, and are proof of the nourishing resources our planet offers us in our quests for healing.

Essential oils can be used in a variety of ways: in cooking, with massage and baths, diffused in rooms, or applied directly on the body.  All it takes is experiencing them firsthand to explore their beautifully rewarding benefits.  There are oils for basic relief of stress and insomnia such as peppermint and lavender, but the essential oil family includes oils to address pretty much the entire range of human emotions, such as grief, jealousy, fear, frustration, joyfulness, excitement, confidence, etc.

For example, Basil is described on the healingbath.ca as: bringing clarity, clears the sinuses, stimulates circulation, especially for the respiratory system *may irritate sensitive skin.  Do not use during pregnancy.

and

Palmarosa: emotional strength, vitality, clarity, antiseptic, bactericidal, promotes skin healing, fever-reducing, hydrating, digestive, stimulant (circulatory), great in oil diffusers during flu epidemics (its action against viral illnesses and bacteria coupled with the attractive smell make it a great oil to use to disinfect a room) *can be dermal irritant.  Avoid use during pregnancy.

When Marianne accepts a client and does a reading for them, she is able to diagnose which oils they are calling for.  Often it will be a combination of oils, which
