Benefits of Vegetarianism

There are advantages and disadvantages to modifying any diet, but if you are regularly carnivorous, and have been considering going "veg" lately, read on to discover the multitudinous benefits of switching to an herbivore lifestyle.  If you are concerned with any of the claimed disadvantages to vegetarianism or veganism, I am additionally going to briefly cover any risks and how to remedy their potentially negative effects, but for the most part a vegetarian diet is full of immediately apparent health benefits which increase over time.

First of all,

Take a preventative step against disease.

Vegetarian diets are proven to prevent cancer and heart disease while lowering blood pressure, preventing and reversing diabetes, eliminating gallstones, kidney stones and osteoporosis and asthma.  Seventy percent of all disease is related to diet, and a balanced vegetarian diet is naturally free of cholesterol-laden, artery-clogging animal products while naturally providing more fiber.  Studies in England and Germany have proven vegetarians are forty percent less likely to develop cancer than meat eaters, and that breast cancer rates are lower in places like China where population survived primarily on plant-based diets.  Additionally, most food-borne illnesses, accounting for 76 million illnesses a year, primarily come from foods such as meat, poultry, fish and seafood.

Have more energy!

Plant-based diets tend to be richer in anti-oxidants, phyto-chemicals, and fiber.  All of these elements contribute to more energy, better digestive health, anti-inflammatory effects, and higher immunity levels.  All of these factors can positively effect your mood and energy levels.

Help the environment.

Chemical and animal waste runoff from factory farms is responsible for more than 173,000 miles of polluted rivers and streams.  When populations adopt vegetarian diets they radically reduce the impact of climate change, rainforest destruction, and pollution, while positively effecting water conservation as well as saving other precious resources.

            According to chooseveg.com:
  1.  Switching to a diet free of meat, dairy and eggs saves 50% more carbon emissions than driving a Prius!
  2. Raising animals for food (including land used for grazing and growing feed crops) now uses 30% of the Earth's land mass.
  3. In the United States, 70% of the grain grown is fed to farmed animals.  Just think of how many people could be fed with that kind of resource and how that would change the face of famine in our country.

Nearly 80% of the land deforested in the Amazon is now used as cattle pasture.

Support compassionate awareness of domesticated animals' quality of life.
Not only are you benefitting yourself and the environment when you choose to go vegetarian, you are dramatically improving the situation of many animals' lives.  At this point there are multitudes of documentaries proving the barbaric treatment of chickens, cows, pigs and other livestock, but the fact remains that farms harvesting eggs, milk, and meat are so far removed from any compassion or sensitivity for animal life it is atrocious.  If you do choose to incorporate meat in your diet, I strongly suggest buying all dairy and meat from local sources such as farmer's markets and local butchers who source their meat from reputable locations.  There are many farms allowing their livestock to live long, healthy, and happy lives, and this is absolutely the best option for those who appreciate meat and dairy in their diet.
